I love thunderstorms.
I love the electricity in the air, the way it makes you feel alive before the first drop of rain ever touches your skin.
There is something almost magical about those moments before a storm.
The air changes.
The world seems to hold its breath.
Everything quiets. Everything slows. As though the earth itself knows what is coming and makes room for it.
And then…
the first drop.
I love the smell of ozone as the rain begins to fall, that strange, clean scent that seems to rise from the earth as if the world is preparing to be reborn.
Sometimes I stand outside and let the rain fall over me.
I imagine it washing everything away.
Every worry.
Every regret.
Every word I wish I had said.
Every word I wish I could take back.
Every piece of myself that feels worn down from carrying too much for too long.
Let the rain wash it away.
Purify me.
Cleanse me.
Not just physically.
Mentally.
Emotionally.
Somewhere deeper than I know how to explain…
Let it seep into every hidden corner of me and carry away the things I no longer want to hold.
Then comes the thunder.
That deep, rumbling voice rolling across the sky.
And the lightning…
God, the lightning.
For one brilliant second, the darkness is split wide open.
The sky flashes with something wild and beautiful and impossible to ignore.
Then the wind comes.
Gusting.
Howling.
Ripping through the trees and bending branches beneath its strength.
I love all of it.
The noise.
The chaos.
The power.
The strength.
And sometimes…
I am envious.
Because no one tells a storm to be quieter.
No one asks it to apologize for being too loud.
No one looks at the sky and says,
You’re being a little dramatic.
We all bow down to storms.
We close our windows.
We seek shelter.
We watch the sky with a mixture of fear and fascination.
And yet…
we wait for them.
Because we know what they bring.
Rain.
Life.
Relief.
Renewal.
Hope.
A storm can frighten us and still give us exactly what we need.
Maybe that’s what I envy most.
The storm never apologizes for what it is.
It doesn’t try to make itself smaller so that someone else can feel comfortable.
It doesn’t hold back the thunder.
It doesn’t soften the lightning.
It doesn’t whisper when it needs to scream.
It simply comes.
It arrives with all its power and all its fury, and the world makes room for it.
And perhaps that’s why I love thunderstorms so much.
Because somewhere inside me, there is a storm too.
There are things I have held back.
Words I have swallowed.
Tears I have hidden.
Anger I have softened.
Pain I have tucked away so neatly that sometimes even I forget where I put it.
But every once in a while, I feel the electricity building.
I feel the pressure in the air.
I feel something inside me rumbling.
And I wonder what would happen if I stopped trying to quiet the storm.
What if I let myself be loud?
What if I let myself cry?
What if I let the lightning strike and the thunder roar?
What if I allowed myself to be powerful, messy, frightened, angry, hopeful, and alive-all at once?
Maybe I don’t need to fear the storm inside me.
Maybe I need to let it rain.
Because storms don’t only destroy.
Sometimes they clear the air.
Sometimes they break the heat.
Sometimes they bring water to things that have been desperately waiting to grow.
Sometimes they remind us that darkness does not mean the end of the world.
Sometimes the storm is exactly what the earth needs.
And maybe…
sometimes it is exactly what we need, too.
